Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a natural thyroid hormone. It is converted to the active hormone (T3) in the body and restores normal thyroid hormone levels, helping regulate metabolism, energy, heart rate and temperature.

Do not stop or change dose without doctor advice; dose is adjusted based on TSH/T4 tests.

Use only under medical supervision; taking too much can cause hyperthyroid symptoms and strain the heart. Caution in heart disease (angina, arrhythmias), hypertension, elderly patients, adrenal insufficiency (must be treated first) and diabetes (may need dose adjustment of antidiabetics). Monitor TSH/T4 regularly; do not use for weight loss. Seek care for chest pain, severe palpitations, shortness of breath or signs of allergy.
