Not for weight loss/obesity. Overdose can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism and serious cardiac events; seek medical help if chest pain, severe palpitations or shortness of breath occur. Use caution in heart disease (angina, arrhythmia, heart failure), hypertension, elderly, and adrenal insufficiency (should be treated before starting). Monitor TSH/FT4 periodically; dose requirements may change with pregnancy, illness or interacting medicines. In diabetics, blood glucose control may change; monitor. In long-term/high doses, risk of reduced bone mineral density (especially postmenopausal women).
Drug Interactions
Calcium salts,iron salts,aluminium/magnesium antacids,sucralfate,cholestyramine/colestipol,sevelamer (reduced absorption); proton pump inhibitors and dietary fiber/soy/coffee may reduce absorption; warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect); antidiabetic medicines/insulin (dose adjustment may be needed); digoxin (effect may decrease when euthyroid); amiodarone (affects thyroid function); enzyme inducers like phenytoin,carbamazepine,phenobarbital,rifampicin (may increase clearance); sertraline and other antidepressants may alter response.
