What exactly is Form 1A and why do I need it?

Form 1A is the medical fitness certificate prescribed under Rule 5 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The RTO requires it to confirm you can see traffic signals, hear horns, and physically control a vehicle. It's mandatory for: (1) anyone renewing a DL aged 40+, (2) all transport/commercial vehicle applicants, and (3) heavy motor vehicle licence holders. Without it, your Parivahan application stays incomplete.

Why can't I just get Form 1A from my local clinic?

Since 2022, most RTOs no longer accept physical Form 1A certificates. The certificate must be uploaded digitally to Parivahan by a registered medical officer using the government portal. A local clinic may issue a paper certificate, but your Parivahan application will remain stuck at the 'medical certificate pending' stage. We upload directly to Parivahan — no intermediary steps.

What happens during the eye and ear test?

You complete a guided online assessment: (1) Distance vision chart — read letters at arm's length. (2) Colour perception — identify red, green, and amber signals. (3) Near vision — read text at close range. (4) Hearing — confirm you can hear normal conversation. The doctor reviews these results during the verification call. If results are borderline, the doctor may ask you to repeat a test or recommend an in-person evaluation.

I have colour blindness / wear glasses / have a hearing aid. Can I still get Form 1A?

Yes, in most cases. Corrected vision (with glasses/contacts) is acceptable — you don't need 6/6 uncorrected vision. Partial colour blindness is usually approved as 'Fit with Some Restrictions'. Hearing aid users are also approved if they can hear conversation-level sound. The doctor evaluates each case individually. Full blindness or complete inability to distinguish traffic signal colours will result in rejection (with full refund).

What if I entered wrong details in the application?

The doctor calls you before processing. If your name, DL number, or identification marks have errors, they can be corrected during this call. This is a key advantage — other services auto-process without verification, and wrong details mean a rejected certificate.

How do I know the certificate was actually uploaded to Parivahan?

After the doctor uploads, you receive an email/SMS confirmation with the signed Form 1A PDF and a screenshot of the Parivahan upload confirmation. You can also log into your Parivahan/Sarathi application to verify the medical certificate slot shows 'Uploaded'.
